Tool. 46 + 2

This is a song I’ve been meditating on for many years, since i was a teenager struggling through not so typical life changing events. Now I’m about to turn 32 and still weathering through what appears to be a not so typical lifestyle. As human beings the majority of us have a natural inkling to conform on some level. Others of us however, have something burning inside that tells us we don’t belong and if we don’t reach into ourselves to pull out our own strength that that fire will dim out until it’s completely extinguished.

42+2 is the chromosome composition of those that believe they are one with everything (like being a cell moving within a body). Our societies composition, 44+2, is a state of mind that acts as a bridge that must be crossed over in order to become aware on a higher level of consciousness, leading us to where we belong… 46+2.

this is also one of my favorite songs to tinker with on my Bass.

AFI “The killing Lights”

afi

-Five A.M. on the bathroom floor from the night before.
Do you find me dreadful?
What a shame such a sad disgrace,
Such a pretty face,
But she’s not regretful.

Am I beautiful?
Am I usable?

It’s killing time again.
Put on your face and let’s pretend,
These killing lights won’t kill us all again.

Three A.M. on the city street,
When the air is sweet,
I’ve had my mouth full.
But it seems that outside the screen
Such a pretty face often will look dreadful.

Am I beautiful?
Am I usable?

It’s killing time again.
Put on your face and let’s pretend,
These killing lights won’t kill us all again.

It’s killing time again.
Cover your face and we’ll pretend,
These killing lights can’t kill us all again.

You see, they always remember.
They never forget a face.

When they cut cut cut cut cut cut cut you up,
Cut cut cut cut cut they remember.

Cut cut cut cut cut cut cut you up.
Cut you uppppppppp.

It’s killing time again.
Put on your face and let’s pretend,
These killing lights won’t kill us all again.

It’s killing time again.
Cover your face and we’ll pretend,
These killing lights can’t kill us all again.

All again.
All again.
It’s time again.
It’s killing time…-

The beauty and horror of art and music is, it’s all open to interpretation. Davey Havok (the singer of AFI) hasn’t personally informed me what this song is about (lol) so my mind is free to relate in my own capacity.
I feel like I really relate to this song on more levels than I’d like to admit but, honesty for me is not overrated. in one of my own songs I wrote, ” The spotlight shines, we intertwine, constricts me until i can’t breathe.” It was about being on stage with a band I no longer believed in but was stuck in the cycle of continuing with because it’s just what i did, it was who I was. The stage lights come on, the curtains go up and we all do the song and dance. “We intertwine” my band plays together and puts on a show. “Constricts me until I can’t breathe”, I was suffocating in the mental and emotional space i was in at that time with the direction in which my band was going.
“It’s killing time again, so put on your face and let’s pretend these killing lights won’t kill us all again.” I don’t know what Davey was feeling when he wrote this but i know what it makes me feel to listen… a sense of relief that I’m not the only one.
I think sometimes we have to accept a lot of things that we don’t enjoy while trying to be successful at the things that we want to do.
Awesome song and I’m grateful he wrote it.
